This summer, treat the young person in your life to a sailing adventure with Tall Ships Youth Trust.

This five-night voyage is a great experience for your 12-15-year-old, where they can learn new skills, gain increased confidence and create lifelong memories.

Throughout the trip they’ll work towards achieving their RYA Competent Crew qualification.

The syllabus includes:

  • Sea terms and parts of a boat, rigging and sails
  • Sail handling
  • Ropework
  • Fire precautions and fighting
  • Personal safety equipment
  • Man overboard
  • Emergency equipment
  • Manners and customs
  • Rules of the ‘road’ (at sea)
  • Dinghies
Places you'll visit

You’ll sail across the Solent with possible stopovers in Cowes and Yarmouth. You may also sail along the South and Jurassic coasts to Poole, Weymouth and Portland.

Be sure to have your camera to hand, as you may spot dolphins, seals and fin whales. Likely stopovers along the coast, include Poole and Weymouth.

After a day at sea, most evenings will be spent covering theory, playing games, relaxing and socialising, or you may have the chance to go ashore. All crew members are accompanied by an adult when ashore

Takeaways from your sailing adventure

New skills. Increased confidence. New friendships. Memories.

Throughout the voyage, you’ll experience steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework as well as learning how to keep safe onboard. If conditions permit, you may also get to anchor offshore overnight or do some night sailing.

We divide the crew into two teams (watches) – traditionally, known as Port and Starboard. In your watches, you’ll take it in turns to be involved in all aspects of sailing the ketch from looking after her to cooking and cleaning.

Each crew member will receive a personal assessment covering their leadership, teamwork and communication skills— a great addition to your personal record of achievement.

Further information

The Skipper will determine the final route depending on weather and other variables.

There’s a possibility you could be recommended by the Skipper to come back and volunteer as a Watch Assistant or Watch Leader for future Tall Ships Youth Trust voyages.

Meals onboard are included.

The cost of your RYA Competent Crew certificate is included in the price.

RYA logbooks are available for purchase onboard at a cost of £6 (Skippers are only able to take cash for this).
