Voyage highlights
Celebrate the February half-term on an immersive sailing adventure like no other with Tall Ships Youth Trust.
This four-night adventure along the south coast is the perfect starter voyage for young people to learn the basics of sailing, on board one of our iconic 72ft Challenger yachts.
As a TSYT ‘Voyage of Exploration’, you do not require any prior experience of sailing. The voyage will enable crew members to explore the ocean environment while learning new skills, developing their confidence and self-esteem, and boosting their social and communication skills.
Not only will you work towards achieving your RYA Start Yachting qualification, but you can use this voyage to tick off the residential section of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award.
You’ll start the voyage sailing through the Solent and then along the stunning south coast. Be sure to have a camera to hand, as you may spot dolphins, seals and fin whales. Likely stopovers include Cowes, Poole and Weymouth.
New skills. Increased confidence. New friendships. Lifelong memories.
Throughout the week, you’ll experience steering (or ‘helming’) the yacht, sail handling, ropework and other sailing essentials, including learning how to keep safe on board. If conditions permit, you’ll also get to do some night sailing too.
We divide the crew into two teams (watches) – traditionally, known as Port and Starboard. In your watches, you’ll take it in turns to be involved in all aspects of sailing the Challenger – from deck duties to cooking and cleaning.
Each crew member will receive a personal assessment covering their leadership, teamwork and communication skills— a great addition to your personal record of achievement and CV.
You may get the chance to complete your RYA Start Yachting qualification while you’re on board.
The cost of your RYA Start Yachting certificate is included in the price. RYA logbooks are available for purchase onboard at a cost of £6 (Skippers are only able to take cash for this).
All voyages of four nights or more qualify for residential section of the DofE Gold Award. Please let our Reservations Team know before sailing if you want to use the voyage for this.
The Skipper will determine the final route depending on weather and other variables.
There’s a possibility you could be recommended by the Skipper to come back and volunteer as a Watch Assistant or Watch Leader for future Tall Ships Youth Trust voyages.
Meals on board are included.
