Join us on a five-day voyage around some of Scotland’s most beautiful island locations!

Starting and finishing in Greenock, this is a great opportunity for beginner sailors aged 12-15 to learn the basics of sail training onboard one of our iconic 72ft Challenger yachts.

As a TSYT ‘Voyage of Exploration’, you’ll mostly be sailing during the day in inshore/coastal waters. You’ll have the opportunity to build positive relationships with like-minded individuals aged 12-15, improve your social and communication skills and practice the five steps to wellbeing/vitamin sea.

You’ll come away from this voyage feeling more able to manage your feelings, with increased confidence and self-esteem. You can also achieve your RYA Start Yachting qualification and Youth Scotland Dynamic Youth Award, if this applies to you.

Places you'll visit

Once you depart from Greenock, you’ll explore the Firth of Clyde with possibly anchorages in Holy Loch, or Lamlash or Loch Ranza on the Isle of Arran.

You’ll also get the chance to explore ashore, perhaps in Campbeltown on the Kintyre peninsula or potentially the picturesque Tarbert Harbour, as well as navigating the stunning Kyles of Bute before returning to Greenock.

Takeaways from your sailing adventure

New skills. Increased confidence. Self-esteem. New friendships.

Throughout the week, you’ll experience steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework as well as learning how to keep safeonboard.

Most of the sailing will take place during the day but if conditions permit, you’ll also get to do some night sailing.

We divide the crew into two teams (watches) – traditionally, known as Port watch and Starboard watch. In your watches, you’ll take it in turns to be involved in all aspects of sailing our Challenger from deckwork to cooking and cleaning.

Each crew member will receive a personal assessment covering their leadership, teamwork and communicationskills.

RYA

You’ll get the chance to complete your RYA Start Yachting qualification while you’re onboard.

The cost of your RYA Start Yachting certificate is included in the price. RYA logbooks are available for purchase onboard at a cost of £6 (Skippers are only able to take cash for this).

Youth Scotland Award

Young people from Scotland joining one of our voyages from Greenock can also use the residential to achieve the Youth Scotland Dynamic Youth Award.

Further information

The Skipper will determine the route depending on weather and conditions.

There’s a possibility you could be recommended by the Skipper to come back and volunteer as a Watch Assistant or Watch Leader for future Tall Ships Youth Trust voyages.
