This six-day voyage from Portsmouth to Plymouth is a great experience for your 12-15-year-old, where they’ll learn new skillsgain increased confidence and create lifelong memories.

They can also use the voyage to improve their sailing expertise and work towards achieving their RYA Start Yachting or RYA Competent Crew qualification depending on their experience.

Places you’ll visit

You’ll sail the Solent and then along the stunning Jurassic and South coasts. Be sure to pack your camera as you may spot dolphins, seals and fin whales along the way.

Likely stopovers include Weymouth, one of the most popular sailing destinations on the South Coast and famous for the Dorset apple cake. You might also visit the busy Devon fishing town of Brixham where if time allows, you can explore its fish markets and renowned seafood.

The voyage ends in Plymouth, where we recommend before heading home you take some time to explore this vibrant city known as  ‘Britain’s Ocean City’. Visit Plymouth is packed full of ideas for places to see including its recommended ‘highlights’ for touring Plymouth in just four hours!

Takeaways from your sailing adventure

New skills. Increased confidence. New friendships. Memories.

Throughout the voyage, you’ll experience steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework as well as learning how to keep safe onboard. If conditions permit, you may also get to anchor offshore overnight or do some night sailing.

We divide the crew into two teams (watches) – traditionally, known as Port and Starboard. In your watches, you’ll take it in turns to be involved in all aspects of sailing the Challenger from looking after her to cooking and cleaning.

After a day at sea, most evenings will be spent covering theory, playing games, relaxing and socialising, or you may have the chance to go ashore. All crew members are accompanied by an adult when ashore.

At the end of your voyage, you’ll receive a personal assessment appraising your leadership, teamwork and communication skills — a great addition to your record of achievement.
