Voyage highlights

Start your Christmas holidays in style sailing an iconic 72ft Challenger!
Develop your confidence and self-esteem
Make new friends while exploring the ocean environment
Work towards your RYA Start Yachting certificate

This is a great opportunity to get outdoors this winter and celebrate everything you have achieved in 2024. Whilst sailing along the South Coast, you will explore the ocean environment and develop life skills.

For this four-night ‘Voyage of Exploration’ on board our iconic 72ft Challenger yacht, you do not require any prior sailing experience – our TSYT crew will teach you the core skills along the way.

This is an experience like no other, where you’ll be able to build your social and communication skills on the water. Throughout the voyage, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your confidence and self-esteem, while also making new friendships and lifelong memories!

You will also work towards achieving your RYA Start Yachting qualification: the first step on your sailing qualifications journey.

Places you'll visit

You’ll sail through the Solent before heading out along the south coast. You may spot dolphins, seals and fin whales along the way, so don’t forget your camera. Likely stopovers include CowesPoole and Weymouth.

Takeaways from your Voyage of Exploration

New skills. Increased confidence and self-esteem. New friendships.

Throughout the week, you’ll experience steering the yacht, sail handling and ropework – you’ll also learn how to keep safe onboard.  If conditions permit, you’ll also get to do some night sailing.

We divide the crew into two teams (watches) – traditionally, known as Port and Starboard. In your watches, you’ll take it in turns to be involved in all aspects of sailing – from looking after the yacht to cooking and cleaning.

Each crew member will receive a personal assessment covering their leadership, teamwork and communication skills — a great addition for college applications and getting your first job.

Further information

The Skipper will determine the final route depending on weather and other variables.

There’s a possibility you could be recommended by the Skipper to come back and volunteer as a Trainee Watch Leader for future Tall Ships Youth Trust voyages.

Meals on board are included.

RYA

The cost of your RYA Start Yachting certificate is included in the price. RYA logbooks are available for purchase onboard at a cost of £6 (Skippers are only able to take cash for this).
