Ready for an adventure at sea like no other? This extended Voyage of Exploration on board our 55ft ketch is an exciting opportunity for beginner sailors!

You do not need any previous sea-going experience to enjoy this voyage – our crew are on hand to teach you the core skills throughout the six-night voyage.

As you sail along the stunning Jurassic Coast, you’ll have the opportunity to make new friends and together, you can explore the ocean environment and develop crucial life skills.

During your voyage, you’ll work with your team onboard to build your skills through activities and new experiences, building your confidence and self-esteem,

Not only will you work towards completing the residential section of your Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Gold Award, but you can also achieve your RYA Competent Crew qualification.​

Places you’ll visit

You’ll begin your voyage by sailing through the Solent before heading out along the South and Jurassic coastlines, where you may be able to sail alongside beauty spots such as Lulworth Cove, Chapman’s Pool and Studland Bay. Be sure to pack your camera as you may spot dolphins, seals and fin whales along the way.

Likely stopovers on this voyage include Cowes, BeaulieuPoole, Weymouth and Swanage.​

Takeaways from your sailing adventure

New skills. Increased confidence. New friendships. Lifelong memories.

Throughout the week, you’ll build experience in the fundamentals of sailing, including steering, sail handling, ropework and onboard safety. You may also get to do some night sailing if conditions permit.

We divide the crew into two teams (watches) and in your watches, you’ll take it in turns to be involved in all aspects of sailing the Challenger – from deck duties to cooking and cleaning.

Each crew member will receive a personal assessment covering their leadershipteamwork and communication skills— a great addition to your CV.

RYA

During this voyage, you will work towards achieving your RYA Competent Crew certificate.

The RYA Competent Crew syllabus includes:

  • Sea terms and parts of a boat, rigging and sails
  • Sail handling
  • Ropework
  • Fire precautions and fighting
  • Personal safety equipment
  • Man overboard
  • Emergency equipment
  • Manners and customs
  • Rules of the ‘road’ (at sea)
  • Dinghies​

The cost of your RYA Competent Crew certificate is included in the price.

RYA logbooks are available for purchase onboard at a cost of £6 (Skippers are only able to take cash for this).​

All voyages of four nights or more qualify for residential section of the DofE Gold Award. Please let our Reservations Team know before sailing if you want to use the voyage for this.​

The Skipper will determine the final route depending on weather and other variables.

There’s a possibility you could be recommended by the Skipper to come back and volunteer with Tall Ships Youth Trust voyages, ask your TSYT crew to find out more.
