Voyage highlights
This sailing adventure is the perfect opportunity for you to explore our ocean environment, build lasting friendships and develop invaluable life skills.
As a four-night ‘Voyage of Exploration’ on board our 55ft ketch, you do not require any sailing experience before boarding, as our voyage crew will teach you the core skills along the way.
Throughout the voyage, you’ll have the opportunity to increase your confidence and self-esteem, while making new friends and building your social and communication skills.
Not only will you work towards achieving your RYA Start Yachting qualification, but you can also use this voyage to complete the residential section of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award.
You’ll begin your voyage by sailing through the Solent before heading out along the south coast. Be sure to pack your camera as you may spot dolphins, seals and fin whales along the way. Likely stopovers include Cowes, Poole and Weymouth.
New skills. Increased confidence and self-esteem. New friendships.
Throughout the week, you’ll experience steering the yacht, sail handling and ropework, as well as learning how to keep safe onboard. If conditions permit, you’ll also get to do some night sailing.
We divide the crew into two teams (watches) – traditionally, known as Port and Starboard. In your watches, you’ll take it in turns to be involved in all aspects of sailing – from looking after the Ketch to cooking and cleaning.
Each crew member will receive a personal assessment covering their leadership, teamwork and communication skills – a great addition to your CV.
The cost of your RYA Start Yachting certificate is included in the price. RYA logbooks are available for purchase onboard at a cost of £6 (Skippers are only able to take cash for this).
All voyages of four nights or more qualify for residential section of the DofE Gold Award. Please let our Reservations Team know before sailing if you want to use the voyage for this.
The Skipper will determine the final route depending on weather and other variables.
There’s a possibility you could be recommended by the Skipper to come back and volunteer as a Trainee Watch Leader for future Tall Ships Youth Trust voyages.
Meals on board are included.
