Voyage highlights
Do something different this February half-term. Spend five incredible days onboard one of our iconic 72ft Challenger yachts.
You’ll learn essential sailing skills and experience a taste of what life on the ocean is really like.
No prior sailing experience is needed for this ‘Exploration voyage.’ As the first stage of our three-voyage journey, it is the perfect introduction to sailing—so just bring your enthusiasm, sense of adventure, and a willingness to learn!
Our exploration voyages are a great way to develop your confidence and self-esteem, create new friendships, explore the ocean environment and develop your social and communication skills.
On this voyage, you will also work towards achieving your RYA Start Yachting qualification; the first step on your sailing qualifications journey.
You’ll sail through the Solent, before exploring the stunning south coast. Likely port visits could include Cowes and Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight, Lymington, Poole or possibly Weymouth.
New skills. Increased confidence. New friendships. Lasting memories.
Over the course of your voyage, you’ll learn about and practice sailing essentials including helming the yacht, sail handling, ropework and how to keep safe on board. If conditions are suitable, you may also get to do some night sailing.
We divide the crew into two teams (watches) – traditionally known as Port and Starboard. In your watches, you’ll take it in turns to get stuck in with all aspects of sailing the Challenger – from deck duties to cooking and cleaning.
Each crew member will receive a personal assessment covering their leadership, teamwork and communication skills – a great addition to your CV.
You’ll hopefully get the chance to complete the RYA Start Yachting course while you’re on board.
The RYA Start Yachting syllabus includes:
- Sea terms and parts of a boat, rigging and sails
- Sail handling
- Ropework
- Personal safety equipment
- Man overboard recovery
- Clothing and emergency equipment
- Rules of the ‘road’ (at sea)
The cost of your RYA Start Yachting certificate is included in the price.
RYA logbooks are available for purchase onboard at a cost of £6 (Skippers are only able to take cash for this).
We believe everyone should have the chance to experience a life-changing voyage and realise their potential.
Bursaries Available: If you’re a parent facing financial constraints or a young person who has faced, or is facing, personal challenges (this could be a learning disability, you are a young carer or are not currently in education etc) we have funding available to support you.
