Voyage highlights
If you’re aged 16 to 25 and looking for your next sailing challenge, this pre-Christmas voyage in the Canary Islands could be just the adventure you’re looking for!
On this eight-night island-hopping voyage between the Canary Islands, which will start and end in Santa Cruz, Tenerife, you’ll develop transferrable skills, gain increased confidence and build resilience, as well as making new friends and creating lifelong memories!
A 4.5-hour flight from London will bring you to Tenerife, which is central to the Canary Islands. The group of volcanic islands is situated in the Atlantic Ocean off the West coast of Morocco and Western Sahara.
The Canary Islands boast a subtropical climate all-year-round, even in the months between November and February, the weather is mainly sunny and warm, with minimum temperatures of 18 degrees and sea temperatures of around 22 degrees.
On board, you’ll meet like-minded individuals aged 16-25. You’ll join together as one crew, living and working on board, while spending full days sailing on board our Challenger yacht.
Sailing around the Canary Islands will bring you to a new and challenging sailing environment, with exhilarating sailing between the varied coastlines and landscapes of the islands, which have long been enjoyed by sailors for their stronger winds in the acceleration zones in between.
The Canary Islands are all geographically unique due to their position in the Atlantic and their volcanic origins. Home to a diverse range of landscapes and terrains, you’ll have the opportunity to discover sand dunes, rock formations, lava beaches, waterfalls, volcanoes, and caves, which can be explored at your leisure, on the days not spent at sea.
There are at least 50 nautical miles of picturesque sailing between the islands, so after each full day’s sailing, you’ll most likely have a free day to make the most of these remarkable islands.
Possible stopovers include La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro to the west, or Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote to the east. You may also stop at other ports on the south-west side of Tenerife, where you can visit its famous volcano and popular national park, Mount Teide, which has a summit at 3,718 metres above sea level, making it the highest point in Spain.
After the Challenger returns to Tenerife, the boat will undergo checks and preparation in readiness for our New Year Celebration Voyage in the Canary Islands. This is an adult voyage, suitable for those aged 18-25 who wish to join us for an extended stay. This next voyage will set sail on Saturday 28 December, click here for more details.
If you are interested in more than one Canary Islands voyage, you can take advantage of our exclusive bundle offering. Contact our Reservations Team for more information: reservations@tallships.org
New skills. Problem Solving. Ocean Sustainability. Friendships. Adventure sailing.
There will be plenty of opportunities to explore ashore and capture memories, so be sure to pack your camera and decent walking shoes for your time away from the boat! In addition to the stunning views, you may also be lucky enough to spot marine wildlife such as, dolphins, seals and fin whales throughout your voyage.
This Canary Islands Adventure requires full involvement from our youth crew. Over the course of the trip, you’ll step up your sailing experience with extended days’ sailing, taking the vessels through challenging island acceleration zones.
Our crews get involved in every aspect of running the vessel, so expect to be working in a watch system and taking your turn at helming, sail handling, cooking and cleaning throughout your adventure.
Once we receive your booking, we’ll need to review all of the information you’ve provided including your medical history and sailing experience, and so your voyage will not be confirmed until you’ve received an email accepting your booking. Please do not book any travel for the trip prior to receiving this email.
Early bird prices: If you book onto this voyage before Thursday 29 February 2024, you will be eligible to receive a 15% discount off the full price of the voyage, reducing the cost to £935. We recommend booking early to avoid disappointment!
The Skipper will determine the final route depending on weather and other variables.
For this voyage, we recommend you pack shorts and t-shirts as well as warmer clothes, as it can get feel cooler while sailing and in the evenings.
Your Skipper can recommend you for our volunteer programme, if they feel you have the skills and attributes that we’re looking for. You can discuss this with them during your voyage if this is something you’d be interested in.
All meals on board are included.
