Voyage highlights

Learn the fundamentals of sailing with this deep-sea challenge
Explore the historic city of A Coruña in Galicia, northern Spain
Build sea miles and work towards your next RYA qualification
Achieve your DofE Gold Award (residential section)
No sailing experience necessary (but this is not for the faint hearted!)

If you’re looking for a proper offshore sailing challenge, then this is the voyage for you! With around 800 nm and the Bay of Biscay to contend with, this is a fantastic mile builder where you’ll experience some seriously exhilarating sailing.

This 12-day adventure is aimed at young people aged 16-25 and qualifies for the residential section of the DofE Gold Award.

In summary, this is a great opportunity to make new friends, build your confidence and widen your sailing experience while creating lifelong memories.

Places you'll visit

Your voyage may include stopovers in ports such as Cowes, Yarmouth, Weymouth, Plymouth, Falmouth, Cherbourg, Brest or even somewhere in the Channel Islands.

Crossing the Bay of Biscay to northern Spain, you’ll experience plenty of offshore sailing (out of sight of land) with multiple days at sea. If the weather allows, there should also be the opportunity to engage in celestial navigation and on clear nights there will be stars to steer by too.

We recommend you pack your camera for your journey as you may spot dolphins, seals and fin whales!

On arrival in A Coruña you’ll have the opportunity to explore this busy port town and historic city. The peninsula on which the old city stands juts into the Atlantic and is where the Battle of Corunna took place during the Peninsular War (1807-1814).

The peninsula is also home to the Tower of Hercules, one of the symbols of the city and the only working Roman lighthouse in the world.

You can also wander along the city’s wonderful seafront via the 10km long promenade – the longest in Europe. The city centre is an interesting collection of Romanesque streets, squares and medieval churches.

Takeaways from your sailing adventure

New skills. Increased confidence. New friendships. Memories.

Over the course of the trip, you’ll experience steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework as well as learning how to keep safe onboard.

We divide the crew into two teams (watches) – traditionally, known as Port and Starboard. In your watches, you’ll take it in turns to be involved in all aspects of sailing the Challenger from looking after her to cooking and cleaning.

Each crew member will receive a personal assessment covering their leadership, teamwork and communication skills— a great addition to your CV.
