Voyage highlights
Join us on this six-day voyage from Portsmouth to the Channel Islands and back.
This is a great opportunity to challenge yourself while developing independence, exploring new ventures, setting goals and pondering your future aspirations.
As a TSYT ‘Voyage of Empowerment’ you should have some sailing experience or have a similar experience in other outdoor and adventure activities. Together with like-minded individuals aged from 16-25 you’ll develop life skills, gain increased confidence and build resilience as well as making lifelong memories.
You can also achieve your RYA Competent Crew qualification and tick off the residential section of your Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, if this applies to you.
The beginning or end of your voyage may include stopovers along the south coast such as Cowes, Yarmouth, Poole and Weymouth. Depending on the weather conditions, we may sail to Alderney, Sark or Guernsey in the Channel Islands.
Life skills. Increased confidence. Independence. Resilience. Decision making. Memories.
Throughout the week, you’ll experience steering a yacht, night sailing, sail handling, ropework as well as learning how to keep safe onboard.
We divide the crew into two teams (watches)– traditionally known as Port and Starboard. In your watches, you’ll take it in turns to be involved in all aspects of sailing the Challenger from looking after her to cooking and cleaning.
You’ll also experience plenty of offshore sailing (out of sight of land). This voyage is a great opportunity to escape from it all, with time for quiet reflection and to challenges to build your confidence and widen your sailing experience.
The cost of your RYA Competent Crew certificate is included in the price.
RYA logbooks are available for purchase onboard at a cost of £6 (Skippers are only able to take cash for this).
All voyages of four nights or more qualify for the residential section of the DofE Gold award. Please let our Reservations Team know before sailing if you want to use the voyage for this.
The Skipper will determine the route depending on weather and conditions.
There’s a possibility you could be recommended by the Skipper to come back and volunteer as a Watch Assistant or Watch Leader for future Tall Ships Youth Trust voyages.
Meals onboard are included.
You’ll need to present a valid passport at the start of the voyage.
