Rear Admiral Dick Melly WHY TALL SHIPS YOUTH TRUST? My time with the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths has given me an insight into the work of the charity sector and a knowledge of many of the great philanthropic organisations. I also serve as a Trustee of the Falkland Islands Memorial Chapel Trust and as a school Governor. As I am now retired, and living in Gosport, the opportunity to assist with the work of the Tall Ships Youth Trust was too good to miss. I am well aware of the benefits and challenges associated with going to sea, and I believe that the work of this charity will absolutely benefit those young individuals fortunate enough to be enrolled on one of the voyages. This charity changes lives. BACKGROUND I served in the Royal Navy for 33 years as a Marine Engineer, attaining the rank of Rear Admiral. My naval career embraced three warship appointments, including active service during the Falklands War, as well as other roles in the procurement, support and personnel arenas. On leaving the Navy, I took up a position as the Clerk (CEO) of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, one of the twelve great livery companies of the City of London, where I stayed for 11 years, retiring in 2016. I am married with two adult daughters, one of whom sailed on the Trust’s former brig, the Stavros.
