Please tell us a bit about yourself

I spent 24 years in the British Army, joining at 16 and spent time in Germany, Cyprus and the UK. I also did tours of duty in a number of Operations.

I have sailed since I was 12 and have competed at club, national & international level match racing, team racing and fleet racing.

I started my youth work career in Blandford in 1991 and I have worked for Dorset, Essex & Bournemouth Youth Services (While still Serving).

I was nominated for a MBE in 1997.

 I Joined the STA/Tall Ships Youth Trust on the 1st January 2000 (Full Time).

I am a Chelsea FC Season Ticket Holder.

Please tell us a bit about your role at Tall Ships

The main functions are the day-to-day management of all aspects of the youth development programme with the following priorities:-

  • Assessing the strengths of the Trust’s current youth development programme (in the context of current government philosophy and policy, other providers and professional research).
  • Identifying the opportunities for improving and developing the Trust’s youth development programme for young people.
  • Oversee the management and administration of seagoing and shore side volunteers

What has been your most memorable moment at Tall Ships?

There have been so many over the years.

What is one thing you think people should know about Tall Ships?

This form of personal development has proved highly successful in improving the trajectory of an individual's personal skill development by providing:

  • A personal physical and mental challenge
  • Teamwork under exacting conditions
  • Awareness of the value of leadership skills and teamwork
  • Teamwork with different social levels and nationalities to promote understanding and friendship

The Trust has a well-established reputation in providing this invaluable preparation for the challenges we all have in our lives, at work and also as part of society.

It is achieved by breaking the pattern of conventional behaviour and encouraging team participation and interaction under challenging and sometimes arduous conditions. Learning how to rely on and be relied upon by your colleagues, leadership, and decision-making skills are all fostered by the Tall Ships Experience.
