  • Explore the beautiful architecture and history of the old walled city of St Malo
  • No sailing experience necessary

Join us on this eight-day voyage from Portsmouth to St Malo and back. Meet like-minded individuals – aged from 16 to 25 and learn new skills, gain increased confidence and create lifelong memories.

Whether you’re a keen sailor or a complete novice this Easter sailing adventure offers you the chance to challenge yourself and have fun! You can also achieve your RYA Competent Crew qualification and tick off the residential section of your Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.

Places you’ll visit

The beginning or end of your voyage may include stopovers along the South Coast such as Cowes, Yarmouth, Poole, Weymouth, or even Brixham.  On the other side of the Channel, you might stop at Cherbourg, Alderney or Guernsey as well as St Malo.

On arrival in St Malo you’ll have the opportunity to explore the glorious walled historic French port with its narrow cobbled streets and selection of small shops, cafés and restaurants.

The tidal range in St Malo can be more than 12 metres and at low tide tourists take advantage of its wide expanse of beach to appreciate the beautiful architecture on one side and the glorious sea on the other.

Takeaways from your sailing adventure

New skills. Increased confidence. New friendships. Memories.

Throughout the week, you’ll experience steering a yachtnight sailing, sail handling, ropework as well as learning how to keep safe onboard.

We divide the crew into two teams (watches)– traditionally, known as Port and Starboard. In your watches, you’ll take it in turns to be involved in all aspects of sailing the Challenger from looking after her to cooking and cleaning.

You’ll also experience offshore sailing (out of sight of land). This voyage is a great opportunity to escape from it all, build your confidence and widen your sailing experience.

Further information

The Skipper will determine the final route depending on weather and other variables.

There’s a possibility you could be recommended by the Skipper to come back and volunteer as a Watch Assistant or Watch Leader for future Tall Ships Youth Trust voyages.

Meals onboard are included.

The cost of your RYA Competent Crew certificate is included in the price.

RYA logbooks are available for purchase onboard at a cost of £6 (Skippers are only able to take cash for this).

Passport and Covid restrictions

You’ll need to present a valid passport at the start of the voyage.

In addition, you must adhere to the French travel restrictions and meet the country’s entry requirements in relation to Covid-19 (see links below for full details, which are updated regularly).
