Challenger 1 – The Clare Foundation

By Kate Stewart - December 20th, 2022 | Posted in Voyager blogs No comments

Joining us onboard Challenger 1 this week, we have a group of young people from two Buckinghamshire-based organisations, Lindengate and Wycombe Youth Action.

Their four night adventure has been fully funded by The Clare Foundation.

Check out their voyager blog to see what they’ve been getting up to since they began their adventure on Sunday (18th).

Day 1

Sunday 18

Today we went on a crazy, amazing and fun adventure with the very experienced adults/voyage crew. The day started off with Dan from Lindengate charity helping us get onto a minibus, we had a two-hour long drive but it was totally worth it after we arrived in Portsmouth.

We met the lovely people on the boat/pontoon, they helped us aboard the lovely spacious yacht and explained the onboard rules.

After that, we got into safety equipment and above deck, we were shown how to put up the sails and steer. I would very much recommend a voyage with these lovely people as they show you how to do so much and give you many life skills that you can use in the future.

Day 2

Monday 19

On Day 2 we stayed in the Cowes Yacht Haven on the Isle of Wight due to an incoming storm too dangerous to venture through.

Throughout the day we did some practical(s) on how to use a chart, how to tie some knots and then had a bake-off, between the Wycombe Youth Action team (captained by Harry), who made chocolate flapjacks and the Lindengate team (lead by Charlotte) who produced chocolate blondies.

We then went into Cowes, onto the high street and to the park and parades. We then ended off the day with board games and showers for some.

Day 3

Tuesday 20

On Day 3, we went from Cowes to Yarmouth Harbour, where we learnt to jive the boat, how to do add a log to the log book, how to make a loose rope near a winch safe by doing a technique called “elephant ears” and more actions.

We needed no wet weather gear whatsoever as the conditions were fine. Once we arrived in Yarmouth, we went into the town again, going down the pier and watching the sea.

We also played UNO to end off the night, while listening to Christmas songs. On the trip on the way to Yarmouth, we also had a go at a pole climb where we put one of the poles out horizontally over the sea and each of us climbed up the rope onto the pole, which was quite high up but we all achieved it successfully. We then abseiled down the rope and back onto the boat with Dan being the fastest one out of all of us to reach the pole with a time of eight seconds.

Day 4

Wednesday 21

On our last full-day trip we voyaged back from Yarmouth, where we stayed last night, to Portsmouth, specifically the marina we met at (Gunwharf Quays). It took five hours to get back to Gunwharf Quays.

We learnt so many new things, including doing a live re-enactment of a M.O.B situation (man overboard) with a fender, learning how to use a compass to find a course while at sea, went over some knots we previously covered and enjoyed the views that the Solent had to offer today.

After we were positioned in the marina, we went for a short walk in Portsmouth with Dan, where we saw HMS Warrior and then finished the day with, of course, more games of UNO.
