Challenger 1 – St Michael’s Middle School

By Tall Ships - June 15th, 2023 | Posted in Voyager blogs No comments

Joining us onboard Challenger 1 for a four-night residential voyage this week, we have a group from St Michael’s Middle School.

Check out their blog to see how they’ve been getting on so far.

Day 1

Monday 12

Today was a great day, we arrived in Portsmouth and met the loveliest people. They showed us around the boat and taught us the basics. Then, with a bit of teamwork, we attached the sail and headed off.

The whole team always offered us food and drinks to make sure we were well hydrated and fed. Our favourite things we did were: grinding the winch, learning how to sweat the sails, and doing teamwork exercises.

We sailed to the Isle of Wight and stopped off there for the night, we were well showered and got the chance to go to the shops to get anything we would like.

We had the most delicious fajitas made by us for dinner, then we settled down ready for a long, fun day tomorrow.

Day 2

Tuesday 13

Today we started off nice, bright and early to have breakfast. Next, once we were ready, we had to prepare the decks by putting the fenders out, checking the lines, bringing the sail up from the sail locker (which were very heavy), then hanked them on and put the winch handles in the pockets.

With a bit of team work we managed to hoist the Yankee sail, the Staysail and then later on the Mainsail, which was a lot of hard work and involved someone climbing up the mast. With all that hard work, we got a reward by seeing dolphins surround the boat.

This morning Kenny (Dan buoy) fell overboard and we did a man overboard drill. After that, we arrived at Weymouth around teatime and went to the beach. We got some drinks and ice creams, and after some of us had showers.

We came back and set up dinner. We had fish and chips, and some people had chicken kievs or veggie burgers. Now we are settling down for a big day tomorrow.

Day 3

Wednesday 14

Today, we left Weymouth to head to Lymington. On the way, we set up the Spinnaker pole and pulled ourselves up along the rope attached to it.

We had dinner on the deck, it was curry. It took us around seven hours to get to Lymington, there wasn’t much wind but we did get to do some sailing without the engine.

Day 4

Thursday 15

In the morning for breakfast we had pancakes, and then did the washing up.

Port watch set the mast up for us to climb. We had loads of fun climbing the mast and lots of us got to the top!

We then departed ready to anchor in the ocean. Once we did, dinner was ready, we had sausages and mash.

Following that, we had a bit of downtime. Then was time to prep the routes for the night sail back to Portsmouth.
