Please tell us a bit about yourself
I’m a Scottish Kiwi, having grown up in Glasgow then spent 20 years in the Royal Marines and Royal Air Force. My son (19) and my daughter (17) are essentially Kiwis as we spent 12 years living there when I left the military in 2005. I’ve worked in the commercial and charity sectors in Australasia and the UK.
I love the outdoors and spend my time trying to stay upright on my paddleboard and fat biking on the beach on the Sussex coast.
Please tell us a bit about your role at Tall Ships Youth Trust?
I’m the Chief Executive Officer, which means I have day-to-day responsibility for delivering the right experience for our young people, to enable them to reach their full life potential through our sailing voyages. I’m also responsible for engaging our donors, partners and supporters, to ensure that we have the right support to deliver our mission.
My role is varied and exciting. One day I’ll be on one of our vessels listening to the crew and young people. Then the next I’ll be in London engaging donors to showcase our work and the impact of their donations.
We’re all part of one crew here at Tall Ships Youth Trust and we all contribute to keep the ship moving forward to — change lives at sea for young people.
What has been your most memorable moment?
Day one, I was on our vessels, meeting our crew and young people about to head out on their first voyage. The excitement and nervous energy were palpable. It’s such a unique environment to challenge and develop teamwork, communications, resilience and self-confidence.
What is one thing you think people should know about Tall Ships Youth Trust?
We rely 100% on donations and support from individuals and organisations, so we work very hard to engage and showcase the impact of every level of support.

I’ve always considered myself a parenting guru, but my son and daughter would tell you otherwise!
