Stephen Hartigan WHY TALL SHIPS? I was brought up in a local authority children's home until I was 18. It was a good upbringing and I benefitted hugely from the kindness of benefactors who supported my education and personal development. I have been blessed with an exciting career and a lovely family (with 3 children and 4 grandchildren) I became involved with sailing when I joined the Lloyd's Insurance market and am now fortunate to own a comfortable cruiser yacht. When I "semi-retired" i wanted to do something to help disadvantaged young people develop their confidence and skills and to benefit from the same opportunities that were given to me in my formative years. Tall Ships Youth Trust fitted the bill! BACKGROUND I have been involved in the International Insurance market for over 45 years, initially as a reinsurer, then as a Lloyds broker and Managing Director of two UK Insurance companies. In 2005 I led the buy out of a private medical insurance business specialising in cover for expatriates. As CEO I moved the company into many developing markets and this business was sold to a very large American Health Insurer in 2014. I joined their European Board as a Non Executive Director and recently became Non Executive Chairman of a company providing Artificial Intelligence solutions to the Health Insurance industry. I have a keen interest in dispute resolution and I am a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a Member of the Academy of Experts and a CEDR qualified Mediator. I am also a member of the Worshipful Company of Insurers.
