The 10th HSBC sponsored Voyage of Achievement onboard Stavros will leave Newcastle today on a ten night voyage. With 43 students onboard aged 16-18, Stavros will make a visit to a Northern European port before returning to London with a sail up the Thames on 14 July.
More than 400 young people have taken part in the Tall Ships HSBC Voyage of Achievement over the past ten years and a number have returned to work as volunteers for the Tall Ships Youth Trust charity. Some have even gone on to develop a career within the marine Industry or taken up sailing as a lifelong interest. Without HSBC’s generous support, this would not be possible.
Commenting on the 10th anniversary Voyage of Achievement, Paul Sinclair, Education Executive, HSBC Global Education Trust said: “HSBC continues to support the Tall Ships Voyage of Achievement because we want to make a difference in the communities we operate in. Sailing can be an inspirational experience. These voyages develop important life skills that young people can take back into their community, school or into a future career.”
To mark the end of the HSBC Voyage of Achievement 2010, Stavros S Niarchos will sail up the River Thames and under Tower Bridge, which will lift to welcome the Ship and her crew into the capital. This will be a truly special event for all of the young people onboard and they will stand proud on the yards as she sails in.
The best place to view this fantastic spectacle is from the banks of the River Thames near HMS Belfast or the Tower of London, or from Tower Bridge itself so why not come and welcome her in if you’re in the area?
